 Founded in 1866, the Iowa State Horticultural Society has promoted horticulture in Iowa for more than 150 years. Established when Iowa was still a young state, the Society brought together fruit growers, gardeners, researchers, educators, and other horticultural leaders to exchange knowledge and advance the art and science of horticulture.

Throughout its history, ISHS has helped connect practical horticultural experience with education and research. Working closely with the State of Iowa and Iowa State University, the Society supported educational programs, meetings, publications, and partnerships that helped horticultural knowledge reach communities across the state.

The Society also provided a statewide forum for Iowa’s many horticultural associations, clubs, and professional organizations. Its affiliates have represented a broad range of interests, including fruit and vegetable production, floriculture, nursery and landscape work, arboriculture, turfgrass management, public gardening, and community beautification. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, ISHS represented more than 20 affiliated organizations with a combined membership exceeding 10,000.

For many years, the Society published The Iowa Horticulturist, which shared educational articles, industry news, research, organizational updates, and the accomplishments of Iowa horticulturists. Its meetings and publications documented changes in the state’s horticultural community while encouraging cooperation among growers, educators, researchers, businesses, and public agencies.

ISHS has also invested in the future of Iowa horticulture by providing scholarships to students pursuing horticulture-related education. Through its annual awards program, the Society has recognized individuals and organizations whose leadership, service, and achievements have strengthened horticulture and enriched communities throughout Iowa.

Today, the Iowa State Horticultural Society continues the mission established by its founders in 1866. Through its affiliates, educational support, recognition programs, and statewide partnerships, ISHS celebrates Iowa’s horticultural heritage while helping cultivate its future.
